SPRING BAMBOO FORAGE

  • Somerset County, New Jersey United States (map)

春笋 / SPRING BAMBOO

How many of us living in North America have had the chance to taste fresh spring bamboo shoots? How many of us are lucky enough to harvest them ourselves, to feel this great graminoid snap with gentle pressure in our hands? We will visit a rogue Phyllostachys aureosulcata (黄槽竹, golden groove bamboo, native to the Jiangnan region of China) forest and contemplate its unlikely, highly controversial, existence in New Jersey. We will see and taste its suburban companions, many also from East Asia. And we will feast on bamboo dishes!

One scholarship slot is available for a workshop assistant - priority will be given to someone who has access to a car and is able to drive a carpool.

The exact location of our meetup point will be shared after registration. It is accessible by NJ Transit, and I am also able to drive 6 attendees from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Email me to reserve a spot - first come, first served.

This workshop is part of 春游 / FIELD TRIPS, a spring foraging and cooking workshop series themed around plants from China that have naturalized in New York City - and all the questions they engender. Foraging workshops are Saturday, cooking on Sunday. See Events page for full series calendar.
